Our history of innovation

1996

Start of research
and first prototype

In the beginning, MRI scans had to be repeated frequently because even small movement caused blurry images. After several scans, patients reported that they felt better – much to the surprise of their treating doctors. They reported less joint pain, could move better and felt generally more active. It stood to reason to test if MRI technology might also be used therapeutically. In cooperation with physicians, engineers and doctors, the inventor of MBST therapy devices Axel Muntermann developed the first prototypes for the therapy system which should later become MBST.

MedTec Medizintechnik GmbH

These first therapy devices based on magnetic resonance technology were tested for 2 years in orthopaedic practices. The results were so strong that MedTec Medizintechnik GmbH was founded to continue development and introduce the new treatment onto the medical market.

Following the patients who gave the impulse for the development in the first place, the first device generation CLOSED∙SYSTEM was used for the treatment of osteoarthritis and diseases of the bones.

“We have many patients with osteoarthritis. As we have a surgical focus, we operate a lot and have about 500 endoprosthesis operations per year. Often, patients come to us who should not yet have this surgery. But they suffer from osteoarthritis grade 2 or 3 with the respective complaints which need to be treated. Many conservative treatment options for osteoarthritis are not really successful. This why we are always happy when we can tell a patient who originally came for the implantation of an artificial joint that there is another conservative option. This is why we started with the causal treatment with MBST magnetic resonance therapy.

It is especially these patients with grade 2 or 3 arthroses who usually respond very well. Many are again able to work without severe problems or continue with their sports. We have treated about 1200 patients with MBST, so we have become very good at assessing the probability for a positive result. In our experience, this is true for about 85–90% of patients.”

Early studies

The positive experiences from practical application of course had to be confirmed by studies. In contrast to the previous opinion that cartilage tissue does not regenerate, the first study showed a measureable increase of cartilage in the knee joint.

2003

Whole-body treatment

Based on the therapeutic success in the treatment of localized bone metabolism disorders, the inclusion of osteoporosis in the range followed logically. For a systemic disease such as osteoporosis, a new therapy device had to be developed which allows treating the whole skeleton at once with flat applicators that are integrated into the lying surface.

First results from in-vitro studies a few years later showed that the proliferation of bone cells increased by 290% after MBST.

2003

Flexible treatment with mobile devices

In addition to the new whole-body treatment option with OSTEO∙SYSTEM, PRO∙MOBIL was developed and facilitated the application of MBST technology. Practically packed, transportable and flexible in use, MBST was no longer bound to the medical practice but team doctors could take the device with them to tournaments or training camps.

But in sports medicine, degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis or osteoporosis are no priority. Instead, it is acute injuries, inflammatory reactions due to overstressing and chronified complaints of soft tissues. Since the efficacy on the cellular level had already been confirmed in in-vitro studies, the company’s own development department was able to develop further treatment sequences based on the tissue-specific parameters and thus expand the range of possible treatments to muscle, tendon and ligament cells.

The new tissue sequences and revision of the device components to a more effective and stable technology for the generation of magnetic resonance resulted in therapy device generation no. 2: OPEN∙SYSTEMS.

“My experience is a record of success of more than 10 years with MBST magnetic resonance therapy in sports medicine in my sports medical practice. For me, it has become an important part of my non-surgical therapy concept but is also used in the follow-up treatment after surgery for acute injuries in professional athletes. The goal is not only full recovery, but also improving the factor time in a successful return to competition process by optimizing the therapy and speeding up the healing.

Several years of successful clinical application confirm: MBST can be used effectively for various diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. But how exactly does it work? Basic research has completed several studies on the active principle and identified several endogenous processes, cells, molecules, and signaling pathways that MBST treatment can influence:

MBST® goes UK

In 2007, respected physiotherapist and long-term rehabilitation expert Ann Clare encountered MBST® technology at an Osteoarthritis conference in Germany. Ann recognized that MBST treatment, in conjunction with physiotherapy, increased the speed of recovery, alleviated long-term conditions, improved mobility, and in most cases, prevented the need for surgery.

Upon viewing the quantitative results, Ann’s children, Charles and Liz, set up the first MBST clinic in Tinwell, Rutland, in 2011. As word spread of the effectiveness of MBST treatment, other well-established and independent clinics specializing in different health practices wanted to provide MBST to their patients.

With thousands of successful treatments and the number of clinics using the technology steadily increasing, Liz and Charles founded MBST Medical UK, a community of passionate healthcare professionals dedicated to enhancing their patient’s health and well-being and making MBST treatment readily accessible to every patient throughout the UK.

Today, we have been treating patients with MBST for more than 17 years altogether. Why? Because it helps our patients in addition to other treatments we use and has done so for a long time!”

Of course, this is no miracle cure. But it is surprising how many patients can prevent surgery for some time and regain their quality of life again. I will always remember one patient who now lives in the United States. MBST is not yet available there and he visits us for treatment of osteoarthritis in the knees about every five years. Due to the severity of the disease in his case, we did not expect to be able to help him without surgery. But he can manage his everyday life without pain and also without taking pain killers. As long as he keeps up moderate training and does not overstress his body, his original knee joints work pretty well. And this is what matters, isn’t it?”

Studies on the treatment of osteoarthritis

Various studies on the treatment of osteoarthritis show a pain-reducing effect for on average 80–85% of treated patients. Sometimes, the changes are still noticeable for up to four years after treatment.

A multicenter study with 4,500 patients showed: „Pain was reduced significantly 6 weeks after NMR treatment in the cases of all four examined indications and stayed measurably reduced up to 6 and 12 months. The improvements in all three forms of pain (pain on load, pain on motion, pain at rest) following NMR treatment were around 21–50% on average.”

MBST® ARTHRO∙SPIN∙FLEX (ASF)

ARTHRO∙SPIN∙FLEX begins the 3^rd generation of MBST therapy devices. Technical improvements made it possible to enlarge the therapeutic field distinctively and make it more stable. With the result that a larger part of the body may be treated and the patient can move more easily which makes treatment more comfortable.

In addition, the range of application was extended so that the tissue-specific treatment of intervertebral discs, nerves and also supporting wound healing and post-surgically has become possible.

2018

MBST® ARTHRO∙SPIN∙LIFT (ASL)

The second therapy device belonging to the SPIN series – ARTHRO∙SPIN∙LIFT – is specifically constructed for the treatment of arms and legs. It allows targeted and comfortable treatment of among others also acute and chronic wounds such as leg ulcers or diabetic foot.

Chronic wounds which had persisted for several months showed faster wound-healing, less severe pain, smaller wound size and an improved wound status in patients who had been treated with MBST compared to the not-treated control group.

“Chronic, non-healing wounds on the foot with concomitant diseases such as chronic lymphoedema of the legs present the practitioner with a difficult situation. The aim of our treatment was to combine classic conventional medical therapies such as wound debridement, lymph drainage and wrapping of the extremity with complementary treatments using local essential oil mixtures in conjunction with magnetic resonance therapy.

We were able to achieve significant wound healing with an improvement in the lymphatic situation of the leg after just a short period of therapy. Both methods therefore prove to be important aids in the treatment of chronic wounds.”

“Before treatment, the patient could only move with crutches and even then the walking distance was only 20 – 30 meters. Sitting was only possible for a maximum of 10 minutes. Two weeks after completing MBST therapy, the patient was pain-free when walking slowly and sitting. Since the third month after starting MBST therapy, she has been able to walk and hike for more than three hours without any problems.”

In addition to the clinical improvement, a control DXA also showed a significant increase in the T-score:

Lowest T-score (L4): -5.0 (previous measurement 6.1)

MBST magnetic resonance therapy provided fast and effective pain relief for vertebral fractures. Since no bisphosphonates were taken, the increase in the T-score can be attributed to MBST magnetic resonance therapy. This case report clearly shows that it is possible to achieve both an impressive clinical result and a clearly measurable T-score improvement without drug therapy, even in cases of pronounced manifest osteoporosis with pre-existing vertebral fractures.”

2019

MBST on the course for success in Spain

MBST has become an important pillar in the treatment of injuries and pain treatment within a short time. Today, patients can have MBST therapy in 36 clinics with more than 60 therapy devices. Top clubs of the Spanish soccer league also put their trust in MBST to support their players.

In Spain, an observation study of the treatment of nerve damages in various indications such as neuralgia, spinal stenosis, trauma-related nerve damage, pain syndromes such as CPS and fascialis paresis was completed which showed impressive results.

“If there is an integrative tissue that interconnects all the elements involved in the human body, that is the nerve tissue. Taking as reference the very good results obtained with MBST technology applied to a wide variety of pathologies (osteoarthritis, bone edema, fractures of various structures, …) we began to think about the therapeutic opportunities that a card that acted on the nervous system could offer us and, therefore, we could apply it in direct pathology of a nerve, such as a traumatic injury or a pathology in relation to a malfunction of the Nervous System, such as fibromyalgia or reflex dystrophy syndrome (Sudeck).

Thanks to the facilities offered by MedTec we soon started testing the nerve card with patients. The response was so good in terms of improved pain and function, that we started to expand the indications, and our surprise was growing because of the great result of the card.

We have used with 162 patients the nerve card and 21 pathologies that we will describe below and, honestly, the results have exceeded our expectations.”

Effective medical technology for Qatar

Innovative treatment methods are in high demand in arabic countries to keep their medical care system at top level. But the hurdles for implementing new treatments are correspondingly high in order to allow only effective, safe and high-quality technology into their health market.

MBST was able to fulfill the high requirements of the approval process so that it can now complement the treatment range in top modern clinics in metropoles such as Qatar and Dubai.

2023

Approved medical devices
compliant with new EU regulations

Medical devices are among the most strictly regulated products of all. With the introduction of a uniform regulation in the EU (2017/745 MDR), the previous requirements have been tightened and the focus has been placed even more strongly on safety and clinical performance. It is assumed that over 70% of manufacturers will discontinue individual products or product lines because they do not meet the requirements.

MBST magnetic resonance therapy devices have already successfully completed MDR certification. The effectiveness is proven by the available data from the clinical application in the Clinical Evaluation Report.

2023

New paths for MBST®
Takeover by Lifco AB

Axel Muntermann, founder and developer of MBST magnetic resonance therapy, will hand over the management of MedTec Medizintechnik GmbH to Lifco AB in January 2023.

Lifco AB is a Sweden-based investment company primarily engaged in the acquisition and development of niche companies. For MedTec, this opens up completely new opportunities to further develop the therapy system and promote the global distribution of MBST magnetic resonance therapy in a targeted manner.
